Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see
www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a) patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a) patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at

Introduction
This document establishes a method for the determination of the essential dimensions of mattresses, bed frames, divans and bed bases.
In order to help manufacturers, retailers and consumers to get the correct fit between the bed components, a nominal dimension, D, has been introduced and tolerances to the nominal dimension are recommended.

Furniture — Beds and mattresses — Methods of measurement and recommended tolerances
1Scope
This document specifies methods of measurement for the determination of the dimensions of all types of mattresses, bed frames, divans and bed bases intended for adult size.
It also includes recommended tolerances based on any nominal dimension, in order to ensure the correct fit between the bed components.
This document does not apply to the following:
—
air beds/mattresses and water beds/mattresses;
—
mattress pads that are placed on top of the main support mattress;
—
dimensions of bed bases for bunk beds and high beds.
2Normative references
There are no normative references in this document.
3Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
ISO and IEC maintain terminology databases for use in standardization at the following addresses:
3.1
dimension used by the manufacturer to describe the size of an item
3.2
bed base consisting of separate slats flexibly held together normally by means of textile, rubber or plastic tape
Note 1 to entry: When loading one slat, the load is transferred to the support by that slat only.
3.3
bed base consisting of slats, springs, etc., which are connected to a structural frame system
Note 1 to entry: When loading one component only (e.g. a slat or a spring), the load is distributed by the frame to the support.
3.4
upholstered bed base consisting of springs, topped with fillings, on a rigid frame, to be used in a bed frame or free-standing
3.5
upholstered bed base used without the need of any framework
Note 1 to entry: It may be constructed with a spring filling or a solid top and may include drawers or storage facilities.
