FOREWORD

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards institutes (ISO member bodies). The work of developing International Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by the ISO Council.
International Standard ISO 4248 was developed by Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Small tools, and was circulated to the member bodies in December 1976.
It has been approved by the member bodies of the following countries :

Jig bushes — Definitions and nomenclature

1SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION

This International Standard defines the various types of jig bushes in common use and gives the nomenclature, in English, French and Russian, which is associated with these bushes. Annex A deals with locking devices; annex B gives the various terms in German, Hungarian, Italian and Dutch.
NOTE -The equivalent terms in annex B (German, Hungarian, Italian and Dutch) are published under the responsibility of the member bodies for Germany (DIN), Hungary (MSZH), Italy (UNI) and Belgium (IBN). Only the terms given in the three official languages of ISO (English, French and Russian) may be considered as ISO terms.

2DEFINITIONS

2.1
fixed bushes
These may be classified, according to their attribution, as press-fit bushes and liners, or, according to their design, as headed or headless.
2.1.1
press-fit bush
A bush pressed directly into the appropriate hole in the jig and used for guiding a drill or reamer in cases where it is not anticipated that replacement of the bush will be necessary or where the dimensions between the centres of adjacent holes are such as to preclude the use of renewable bushes and liners.
2.1.2
liner
A bush fitted permanently in a jig plate for the purpose of accommodating renewable bushes.
When headed liners are used, the head may be flush in the jig plate or the head may be proud. (See figures A.2.1 and A.2.2.)
2.2
renewable bush
A bush intended for insertion in a liner and used for guiding a drill or reamer.
There are two types of renewable bushes : the "slip" bush designed to facilitate rapid changing in cases where, for instance, several different operations and tools are required to follow the same general guide, and the "fixed" type which is intended to remain in the jig until too worn for further use (see 3.2.1, 3.2.2 and 3.2.3).
